Theodore Roosevelt Island Activities
The programs and activities of the TRA have largely subsided in recent years, now that most Rooseveltian sites and artifacts have been safely preserved. Today, the organization's endeavors are limited to the conduct of Theodore Roosevelt Police Awards (given in New York, Dallas, Boston, and other cities to police officers who have overcome handicaps), and the Thedore Roosevelt Teddy Bear program, which each year gives Teddy Bears to hospitalized children in New York City and Nashville during the December holiday season. The TRA also conducts occassional historical and educational conferences, publishes a sporadic scholarly journal, sponsors public speaking contests for high school students in New York, and provides some measure of support to various public sites dedicated to TR. Generally, in terms of contemporary relevancy, the TRA is today greatly outshown by other organizations which far more energetically embody TR's spirit of robust, activist citizenship. These include the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership and the Roosevelt Institution.
Visitors are reminded to carry water with them, especially during the warmer months. Bicycles are not permitted on the Island. Dogs must be on leash at all times.
